Remove Yourself from the Situation
If things are escalating quickly and you can feel a wave of anger coming on, the best thing to do is to immediately step away and remove yourself from the situation. Taking a moment is a great way to pause your anger and help you get some balance back before you make a potentially challenging situation even more toxic. If you feel like you’re able to, briefly mention to whoever you’re around that you just need to take a moment to collect yourself and you’ll return when you’ve calmed down enough to have a reasonable discussion.
Get Some Support
If you have a close person in your life who often acts as a calming force, don’t be afraid to give them a call if you’re in the midst of a bout of anger. Make sure however that you’re not necessarily using them to vent out your frustrations, but as a mechanism for calming you and helping you find balance in a regular conversation. Often venting can get us even more keyed up, and the goal with speaking to a friend is to calm yourself down and find levelness before returning to your tricky situation.
