Grief Counseling Techniques
When it comes to both in-person and online grief counseling, there are a number of different techniques that therapists might employ or recommend to help us understand and process grief. Part of working with a therapist means exploring some of these techniques to see what you find helpful and healthy in working through grief, however, it’s important to remember that one size does not fit all, and different people experience grief in different ways.
Read on to learn more about some of the techniques that your grief counselor might employ or have you explore either during or outside of your sessions.
Meeting in a Private or Quiet Place: It’s extremely important when dealing with grief to ensure that you’re working through your emotions in an isolated and quiet environment. Trying to process loss in between busy work meetings, in a public area, or busy household is extremely unproductive and will not give you the space you need to truly engage with your feelings and emotions.
Talking About the Moment of Loss: Often with the loss of a loved one, the moment that one comprehends this loss can be the most traumatic moment. Because of this, it’s common for grief therapists to support their clients as they work through this moment together in order to re-experience this moment and process it in a healthy and supportive way.
Setting Realistic Goals
As with most types of therapy, setting goals that are realistic is extremely important when working to process grief. It’s important that these goals aren’t too urgent as that can lead to rushing through grief without truly taking the time to process it. These goals should be discussed with your counselor who can support you every step of the way.
Creative Outlets
An in-person or online grief counseling session is a great space to process grief, however, you might also be advised to try some techniques outside of your sessions as well. Many people experiencing grief find creative outlets such as journaling, art therapy, or creating a memory book to be great ways to help process feelings and work through grief in a healthy and productive way.
